Reading Literature Test is on Wednesday

On Wednesday, students will take their 2nd Trimester reading literature test. Students will have to independently read a short story, and then answer questions based on the standards below.

“I Can” Read Fiction
(Reading – Literature)

I can read, understand and discuss the fiction stories I read.

  • RL.4.1 I can explain a story by referring to details and examples in the text.
  • RL.4.2 I can figure out the theme of a fiction text by thinking about the details in the text.
  • RL.4.2 I can summarize a fiction text in my own words.
  • RL.4.3 I can use specific details in fiction text to help me describe a character, setting or event in the story.
  • RL.4.4 I can figure out the meanings of words and phrases an author uses (context clues, root words, etc).
  • RL.4.5 I can write about the differences between poems, plays and fictional stories.
  • RL.4.5 I can refer to specific elements of poems (verse, rhythm, meter) and plays (characters, settings, descriptions, dialogue, stage directions) when I write or talk about a piece of fiction.
  • RL.4.7 I can make connections between a written text and a visual or oral presentation of the same text.
  • RL.4.10 I can read and understand fourth grade stories, plays and poems independently.

For practice, you can have your child read the short story, "Davy is Absent," and discuss the questions following. Also, be sure to ask them to identify the theme and the genre (poetry, drama or prose). Use the "I CAN" statements above to help guide your discussion.

I just came across this great article explaining the importance of really knowing times tables.  It also has tips for helping your child get better with their times tables!  I thought you all might enjoy this quick read.

Happy New Year and New Units!

Welcome back and happy New Year.  From what I've heard from the kids, it sounds like everyone had a fantastic winter break.  I know I had a fabulous time in New Zealand.  The weather was stunning and everything there is beautiful!

Exploring Raglan beach in NZ!
At Huka Falls in NZ!

With the new year, we have lots of new units.  Every child received a new novel to read yesterday.  Kids are reading different novels to match their interests, Lexile scores, and the content of the text.  Over the next five weeks they will be reading their novel in chunks. Then, meeting with me each week for guided reading groups in which we will focus on specific skills each week.  Your child has a book mark with the weekly reading requirements.  Be sure to check this out if you haven't seen it already.  In addition to reading their assigned chapters each week, students need to complete a summary in the journals they made today, and they must select one new/interesting word.  They should write the word and definition on a sticky note and stick it in the book by the word.  Each week they will have some time in school to work, but they should also work on these things at home.

Also, we are starting a new unit in science this week- Land and Water!  This is a really cool hands on unit in which students will study: the water cycle, steams, rivers, dams, rocks, erosion, and so much more.  Actually my trip to New Zealand was great for this unit- I think I saw, hiked or swam in every type of land and water while I was there (see photos above for just a few examples)!

In writing we starting a mini-unit on Procedural Writing (AKA How To writing).  We have starting by doing a few quick activities that will lead kids into being able to write an essay explaining "How To" do any topic of their choice.
